Customer Review: REVISITED - FAILED after 2.5 years (was: Excellent overall)

Edited June 2007: Ours failed as well! Same problem, where it stops after
three seconds and makes a burning/ozone smell. We called Panasonic and
they were less than helpful. I would no longer recommend this oven.
Old review follows:
We purchased this microwave to replace a 12-year-old GE
microwave. We wanted a microwave oven with a large capacity
and relatively simple controls.
This oven is quite large. It has a turntable big enough for
a 9x13 baking dish. (I prefer to have no turntable, but they
don't seem to make those anymore, so it is necessary to get one
of these huge microwaves in order to fit a long dish.)
The oven is very powerful compared to others I have used. Be
careful, for instance, with microwave popcorn - it is done
surprisingly quickly. A "chik patty" cooks in about a minute,
as opposed to close to two minutes in our old microwave.
I don't like the stainless-steel finish (and I'm not sure that
it was available in other colors when I ordered it), because it
shows *every* fingerprint or dot of water. Even right after
windexing, I feel like it looks streaky.
The only other irritation is its scrolling text when it is time
to take out the food: "Enjoy your meal...enjoy your meal..." or
time to finish programming a cook cycle. I have not figured out
whether it is possible to turn off this text option.
Installation was very simple, but do follow the instructions
as to the one little square of cardboard inside - apparently
this is *not* packing material...I don't know what would happen
if you removed it, but it seems a bit odd to me.
All in all, this product was very satisfactory, and seemed
reasonably priced for the size and power of the oven. Be sure
to take careful measurements of your counter space, to make
sure that its large footprint and height are appropriate for
your kitchen.
